Apps and battery power

Either the weather is a tad warmer or I am getting use to the cooler weather, either way it feels better today ๐Ÿ™‚ย  It is warmer.

Tomorrow the host (Elaine) and I, have decided to take a walk and we are just going to wing it. It will more than likely be a nice long walk.

I hope that it is as nice tomorrow as today because I am loving the weather today. Haven’t even had to put on my sweater today. When I get back to Quartzsite I think I will pick up an extra propane tank, the weather is going to cool off far more than I like and I’ll be needing some heat ๐Ÿ˜ฆย  Having an extra tank of propane on hand will be reassuring.

This area has many boon-docking opportunities, there is BLM land all around, not to mention the area I am in is nice too. I kind of like it here where I am best though, because the truck stop is handy to have around for little things and it gives me a place to go visitedย  and people watch now and then, just for something to do.

Today has been nice and sunny and I am glad to see it. My solar is purring alone just fine and the batteries are putting away the power for the evening. Just the way it should work out here in the wild west ๐Ÿ™‚ where there is lots of sunshine.

About battery power and apps on your device/devices …… If you use any app that measures battery consumption use of other apps, it will worry you some that your favorite apps are the power eaters, LOL. For me it is avast and Beautiful Widgets(which may be kind of dated) that are sucking down lots of my battery, about 30% total. Of course, also in the top 4 are android’s own system software, one the keyboard (I do a lot of swiping on it ๐Ÿ™‚ย  ) and two, is the system uiย  itself. I could take out both Beautiful Widgets and avast but I like them both whether I need them or not, and I get by with my battery good enough. It is interesting to know these things though. Anybody know of a weather/clock app that does well on power consumption?ย  I am sure there are tons of clock apps that don’t use much power but the weather apps may use more seeing as they got to check in more often. However I am looking. LOL, this is what I do when I get too much time on my hands.

Okay, night folks.

Only a few more days

My stay here in Chiriaco, CA will soon be over and I think I will head back to Quartzsite, AZ for a while. I have very much enjoyed my stay here, even though it started off kind of bad with my solar panel accident. It was kind of bad luck leading into good luck, if you believe in all that luck kind of thing.

Today has been slow for me. I am not taking a walk today because I am thinking I’ll rest up a bit for a bigger walk. I’ll take that bigger walk tomorrow or Sunday, not sure just yet.

Yep, slow day. Today I have stayed close to the RV, I usually get out a little and talk to one or two of the neighbors but not today. I have those days where I just want to do nothing, not very often but now and then. Maybe you could call them non-social days? I am fine, no blues or nothing just want to stay to myself a little. I think everyone has a day like that yes?

Here is a shot from my walk yesterday and if you go to the set the last 9 are new pictures. Oh, this guy was 3 or 4 inches long, best guess.

Tools for Android

I have been using my tablet (Nexus 7) about 80% of the time anymore for my blogging and internet surfing and as I go along I gather more and more little tools to help out. Of course my favorite tool/app is the WordPress app โ— Next are the tools that help me write, if you have read my blog much you know that writing is not my strong suit! The first tool is build in to all the mobile devices and that is speech recognition which would be hard for me to live without. I am the world’s worst speller and if I can’t spell it, I can pronounce it, sometimes pronounce it, if my heavy Southern drawl accent don’t get in the way, speech recognition is very helpful. As you see from reading my blog I don’t use big words but still I come across words I can’t spell and then, I will try to speak them and sometimes the tablet just don’t get my Southern drawl and will not recognize what it is that I am saying. Oh boy, when this happens it makes me angry after about ten tries and I will sometimes slip up and give it a good cursing, which of course the dang thing will recognize right off the bat and print it up on my screen! And then I will kind of look at it in surprise and wonder if I threw it hard enough if it would go through the window and outside! LOL! Thank goodness I have not give it a good pitch yet, and so those times turn into little breaks ๐Ÿ™‚

LOL, okay on with the tools! The next tool/app that I use is the Easy Text To Speech app on my Nexus 7 and on my computer I use Microsoft’s (SPA15 TTSAPP). The Easy Text To Speech app will speak what ever you copy to the clipboard. I use this to play back what I have written and that often helps me catch little mistakes (Not always). Another tool that is build into most devices now-a-days is the swiping keyboards, they work very well once you practice for a while. On my computer I use a clipboard manager (Ditto) to same my clips which comes in very handy. Today I installed a clipboard manager for the tablet called (Clipper) and I am going to give it a try, so far so good. One last tool that is build in to all the devices is the spell checker, I surely could not live without this.

If you are like me and simple ain’t no writer, but want/need to write something anyways, the above apps will help, I recommend them for all non-writers, that are going to try writing anyways.

It is turkey day one of 2013, so happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating the day.

Exercise; I took a pretty fair walk today with the park host (Elaine) (maybe 3 miles round trip)ย  and we plan to have one more big walk, maybe up the same canyon,ย It is definitely worth seeing more than once. It is nice to have a walking friend while here at Chiriaco.ย I am glad that I ended up staying here at Chiriaco and not at the Cottonwood exit. I got someone to walk with, the truck stop is handy for little things, I have a place to get water for the RV and there is plenty of places to walk very near by. All these little things are making my stay more pleasant.

Okay it is time for the weather …… ๐Ÿ™‚ย ย  didn’t think you was going to escape that did you? It is cool, the new slimmer me don’t much like this cooler temperature but there is not much to be done about it. It is surprising how much a 100 pound weight loss can change your weather preference ๐Ÿ˜ฏ It is really not all that bad, but I like trying to live without heat and it is just not working out here, the evenings get a bit cool so I fire up the heater for 2 to 3 hours in the evening. The heater is turned off when it is bed time and once I am off to bed, I am good to go because I just pull on more cover if I get cold. The colder weather makes me sleep-in too, I just don’t much want to get out of bed when it is cold. I often peek through the window shade to see how high the sun is ๐Ÿ˜ˆ before getting up.

Morning

It is about 9 am and I am up and kicking, although not all that high. Life is good. Okay, I am going to get the old dude weather thing over early today : shock:ย  It is a tad cooler than I like and there is some of that old humidity that I so dislike, all of which gives me a constant little shiver, brr. I always feel cold.

Afternoon 1pm;ย  Still cool and now overcast, this weather makes me sad! LOL. Say, do you think life is pretty good if all you have to do is to complain about the weather? Okay I feel better now, I can move on to something else in my blog ๐Ÿ™‚

I have updated my apps today on Google Play. I had a lot of apps that I no longer used and you can delete them by going to the play store click on show all apps and then hit the x by the apps you no longer want Google to save for you. One needs to do this now and then because after trying out a lot of apps that list gets kind of long. I think I am like most other folks I have a lot of apps but there are only a few that I use a lot.

Also today I have played around with my Android browser ( Dolphin) because the update to Google’s new OS Kit-Kat(4.4) has broken a couple of things in it. Well, let me rephrase that, the Dolphin update for the new OS Kit Kat is what broke the plugins/and other things. One, the pinch-zoom no longer works the same and two, my Lastpass add-on disappeared. Lastpass is important to me so I had to find a workaround. The problem was some old themes I had install for dolphin many moons ago. These where themes I had installed through the Google store and not add-ons, so it took me a while to figure it out. So ….. If you use Dolphin and you have updated and lost your Lastpass addon go to the play store and uninstall any themes for dolphin you have installed, and it will let the Lastpass app work again. The pinch-zoom thing is something I just have to live with because I see no way to get the old way back. After some support help from the folks at Lastpass, they tell me that Dolphin will be getting a new update soon, to fix things.

Exercise; I added a slow walk to my day. I was out for over an hour but just kind of strolling along and taken a few pictures. At least I was moving a bit. I need to move some to help loosen myself up, I get mighty stiff if I don’t keep plenty of movement in my day. I am slowly adding back a little stretching, and it is much-needed. Here is one from my walk.

Catching up

All the little things get behind when I have a major problem happen (like flipping solar panels), little things, that need done all the time, like windows, screens, batteries and other such things. The one thing I always manage to keep up on is exercise, a good thing.

This morning I had a short but exhilarating walk ……. :-!ย  Well the return was anyways, because I ran the last half mile! Now, I am not a runner, so why you ask? Well I took off for a short walk this morning to the other side of the interstate because I wanted to check out the BLM land that is over there. I was just cruising along at a nice leisurely pace enjoying the nice beautiful morning and then on my way back, I remembered, that I had put on tea water to heat up, and promptly forgot about it, and stepped out for a walk. Will needless to say when my brain turned back on and I remembered, I picked up the pace, LOL!

All was well when I got back, except my mind’s wondering of its well being : shock:ย  Anybody got any jellybeans? LOL. (For those that can’t catch that reference, it is referring to Ronald Reagan’s likeing of jelly beans when he was in the white house and later in life developing Alzheimer’s disease) A friend and I will often ask each other “you got any jellybeans?” when one of us forgets something, that we just shouldn’t forget. We don’t mean it in a bad way, but with good humor, like Ronald Reagan had about his Alzheimer’s disease when he first got it, he was once quoted saying the best thing about it was that he got to meet new friends everyday. Don’t care who you are, you got to love a person that can keep such great sense of humor when having such terrible disease.

Got a couple things done today. One was to get a load of water for the RV and the other was getting the batteries checked and water added as needed. There you go, little exercise and a couple of chores just about makes the day complete for a old dude …….. Only one thing left to do …..

The weather has been pretty fair, with a bit of clouds. The temperatures has been slightly below my liking but still okay. Now I can call this a full day …… Just had to have a little weather in here! LOL.

All is well, night folks.

New pictures

M9_0646Today I run the roads a bit and post process a few photos. I have added more shots of Joshua Tree and of the Patton museum just in front of where I am staying. Here is old Patton himself, and a link to the set with many pictures added. As for the running the roads part, I took a ride into Indio (30 miles or so) and did a little shopping.

That is about all for today, night folks.

Solar Nailed Down

I have my solar panels in good enough shape that I can travel now, and the vent patched enough to whole till I am back to Quartzsite in a week or two. You can bet your bottom dollar that all the bolts are tight!

My solar panels are OK, they still charge as good as ever, and I am thankful for that. A thousand wonders.

Took a small walk today with Elaine, couple of miles maybe. I must confess I am beat, after the big walk yesterday, the solar work today and then the short walk today.

The new Bird of the week is a Vinder and I took this picture in Wellton, AZ

Verdin

This Sunday kind of snuck up on me, just another one of them deals of time flying by.

Joshua Tree National Park

Everything is still wet from all the rain yesterday so I may just give it a day or two to dry out. It rain a lot yesterday and everything got a good soaking.ย  The weatherman says, Today’s temperatures will be about mid 60s and the rest of the week about 70 or so. There is a good bit of humidity though and it sure feels colder than it really is, to me. I just don’t care for much humidity at all.

I guess the good news is, that even with all that rain I did not have any leaks so I must haveย  gotten the roof patched it up pretty well.

Going for a walk!

A sweet walk it was! The lady that is the host of the camp ground and works in the Museum here is a great walker and we went together. I love walking even by myself but I must confess it was just a super joy to walk with this lady(Elaine), we had a great time ๐Ÿ™‚ We walked to these two Oasis, very neat.

Pictures of the walk in Joshua Tree National Park. Click the images for larger pictures, or go here to see the set on Flickr, there is more pictures in the set. To give you an ideal how big these trees are the third picture over has Elaine in it, so you can see they are pretty big.

Rain

I will fill you in on yesterday events. I got on the road and decided to come over to Joshua Tree National Park and I am here (well almost) but I had a boo boo on the way. When I last put down my solar panels from being titled up to catch more sun light, I didn’t get the mounting bolts tight enough and the front mounts got lose and three of the panels flipped over on top of the RV. I was damn lucky they did not come off and end up on the interstate or worst yet stuck in someone’s windshield!

So the damage is …….. ! There are six places where the four solar panels mounted and four of those mounts where mess up, only the front two escaped damage . I have them made out of aluminum and it was bent up petty bad, I was able to straighten that out fairly well. When the panels flipped they tore two holes in the roof of the RV where the two center mounts are and this I have been able to patch. It busted one of the crank up vents in the bathroom and for this I will have to buy a new one, it needed replacing anyways. The holes in the roof where the worst of it, these will be patch over with half inch plywood (about a foot Square) then sealed and cover with roof sealant. For now, I have cover and seal them with some old plywood I found laying around the truck stop. I still need to bolt down the mounts, when this rain ever stops. After that I need to find something to temporarily cover the vent (for now it is duck tape) and I will be able to travel again. I will wait till I’m back in Quartzsite, in about two week, to get things back in shape/do the job right. In Quartzsite you can find anything you need for an RV.

Not a great day to work on the roof of the RV ๐Ÿ˜ฆ it is raining, very dark and overcast today, nothing good for either roof work or solar testing! Yesterday I did get the holes patched, so I am thankful for that much. I worry a little bit on it, because my fix is not for heavy rain and it appears to be setting in to stay for a while. Also the panels are not fix for the long term, and I’ll need to do a little more work to them before I can move on down the road. I will just have to wait out the weather here, again I am lucky because this is a place I can stay for a while. My like of attention to detail has caused me a lot of problems but it appears my luck is running pretty good, it could have been so much worst.

As it turns out my panels all look to be OK and the damage is just to my mounting system and the RV. Of course, I won’t know for sure about the panels till I get a nice sunny day. I can fix all the RV boo boo’s myself with materials that I already have, except the vent.

Looking over the forecast for the area, today does not look like it will be getting any better but tomorrow should only be cloudy and then Sunday will maybe get us back to some sunshine, and I sure hope so!

Although I am in pretty fair shape for my age all the climbing has left me a bit sore, ouch! I have to take a little break because of the rain anyways, so it will be such as it is. It is now noon and the rain is still coming down slowly but steady. Update; 3pm the rain is still going off and on. Last update; it was raining when dark set on ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

About the place I am in …… It is kind of neat. A privately owned area with boondocking allow, don’t know the limits but I read on the net about someone saying they stayed for three weeks, I will not stay that long, but it good to know I don’t have to rush. There is a truck stop here with water for the RV and foods for eating out (Fosters Freeze, and a sat down Cafe), a military museum with a Memorial to soldiers from several wars, several old Tanks sitting around that you can explore, some other old weapons and a ton of desert to walk in. The Joshua Tree National Park fence is only quarter mile or so away so if you want to walk in the park you can. I will write more about this place later, and maybe take some pictures.

Oops my times are an hour off, I cross a time zone yesterday. Don’t guess it matters what time it is when you are having fun, right? I won’t be changing any clocks because I don’t plan on being in this time zone long.

Rain ……. It did just that all day long! Am I in the desert or what? Maybe I took a wrong turn and ended up in some rainy place! Is there a rule when something goes wrong with your roof, that it must rain all day? You know I am beginning to not like rain much ๐Ÿ˜ฆ When I lived back east for all those years I don’t remember rain being such a pain, and there was much more of it back east, what’s the we deal? LOL. Rain & #$+&)$ and “that’s all I got to say about that!”

Hope tomorrow is dryer ………

New Location

62500 Chiriaco Rd
Indio, CA 92201
My new Location

I did some damage to my solar panels today but hopefully it is not too bad. Some of my mounting bolts got loose on the way over to my new location.( my fault, I didn’t tighten them tight enough) I have been the fixing the damage most of the afternoon. I’ll tell you more about that tomorrow. Lucky for me it is nothing I can’t fix. Hopeful that is so anyways, I will do some testing tomorrow. Also I will be adding some safety features to the panels.

That is what I get for letting myself get distracted. Got to get my head on right!

I’ll need a couple days to get back on track with the blog and catching up with you folks. Thanks to everyone for keeping up with me ๐Ÿ™‚ I have seen my comments and I’ll get back to you guys soon.

This stop was not planned ……. Shoot, this move was not planned! Needless I am here, LOL. All is good, this is as good a place to be as anywhere else.

OK, I am going to keep it short tonight, so good night to you folks.
