Friend’s Saying: This post is about my phone change over form the Home Connect Device to a Smartphone and as I put away the old stuff that it took to make my Home connect work in the RV, this saying that my friend likes to use came to mind about myself …….. “It ain’t easy being me!“ LOL.
Pictures: Before and after 🙂
This is what it took to run my Home Connect (picture below). Front left is the DC to AC power inverted(remember I am in my RV running on solar) so everything had to run on DC. (Note: I do have a large inverted but only run it when I need larger items powered.) Next, The Home connect itself with it AC to DC power supply, this would have been better if they made it DC only, it is the square device on the left above the AC to DC inverted. Of course you must have a home phone to plug into the Home Connect and they come with AC to DC power supply. Lastly is the DC plugin adapter with a long cord to the right of the phone.
How it all connected, 1.Plug the DC plug w/extension in the RV’s DC outlet, 2. Plug the DC to AC converter into the DC extension, 3. Plug the AC 1 to 3 adapter into the DC to AC converter, 4. Plug both the phone’s and the Home Connect’s AC to DC power supplies into the AC 1 to 3 plug. Lastly plug the phone wire from the phone into the Home Connect. Now all I had to do was to keep it together. So …. I put everything in the blue container (which I made a lid for and set the Home Connect and phone on top secured with Velcro. So with all that done all I had to do to move it from one room to another room in the RV (or take it to my truck if I wanted a phone on the road) was to pull the DC plug from the RV and move the blue box to where I wanted the phone and plug it back in. Simple right??????? No ….. ???
Okay, maybe that is why I got the smart phone 😉 Also if I wanted to take my Data on the road with me when I left the RV I had to take the MiFi Device and a tablet with me, now I just take the Smartphone. One downside to the smart phone (even with prepaid on Straight Talk) is that it cost me $20.00 more a month.
Note: For other RVers that might want to keep their cost down on phones w/data and such. The Straight Talk phone plan is $45.00 a month and has unlimited talk and text and 5 gig of data (at 5 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, if you put it on the CDMA side of Straight Talk, which is best for the most coverage area) after you use 5 gigs it drops to 2G speeds. Note: If you can live with a little less coverage, the AT &T side of Straight Talk is faster. I just did a speed test on the phone and it pretty much reflects these numbers. I also did a speed test on the MiFi device (Verizon) and it was a bit faster at (9 Mbps down and 8 Mbps up) but I am happy enough with the speed of the phone at 5 and 2 Mbps.
The simple life 🙂
RIP MapMyWalk: The MapMyWalk app will no longer work on my old Thunderbolt Smartphone 😦 Okay it is time to give up the Thunderbolt. I only use it as a pocket tablet anyways so I guess things will work out. I don’t have a mobile phone because I am too cheap to pay the ridiculous monthly cost to have one, so for a phone I use Verizon Home connect and I kind of like the ideal of leaving the phone at home 🙂 But I do like to have a data connection with me … so some kind of device that I can carry in my pocket is the thing I,m looking for. A smart phone that is not connected to a carrier would do the trick like the Thunderbolt but a newer one that will work with modern apps. For now I just put the MapMyWalk app on my Nexus 7 and stuck it in my back pocket, but I would like a smaller device for that. So ….. I am on the lookout for something that will work. Maybe a iPod or Smartphone of some sort. At any rate I have needed to let the old Thunderbolt go for a while now so now is the time, RIP Thunderbolt!
Exercise: I took a good walk, just to walk off my frustration of not being able to get the MapMyWalk app on the Thunderbolt, and that I did, no more frustration 🙂 I walked with MapMyWalk! Distance: 5.30mi, time: 02:04:07, pace: 23:25min/mi, speed: 2.56mi/h. A nice walk.
Bird of the week ….? : Okay bird of something …. it is a
This morning I will be leaving for the doctor’s appointment I have in El Paso today and I will not have time to play on the computer much, so I figure I best get my post for today done now.
Looks like it will be a nice day out to be driving around between towns today so that will help the day go better. I am hoping that I only have to have this one appointment with the knee doctor and I don’t have to go back, I will know one way or the other by the end of the day.
My contract is up with Verizon and I am thinking about what way to go on my phone and air-card. I really enjoy my smart phone but the thing is costly. I have about the best deal one can have from Verizon now, unlimited data, and 450 minutes talk time (I never use more than 100) on a 4G phone, for about $70.00 a month. The new plan cost about $90.00 and you have like 2 gigs of data , I think. With this in mind upgrading to a newer phone is not going to happen because I would have to switch to the new plan. I am never going to go on the new plan, so sooner or later I will have to drop Verizon. My Air-card is 5 gig for $50.00 a month. Option ………….. there are too many to go over, and they are all costly. I am thinking on it.
I best get off this computer and get the day started. Every one have a nice day.
I will have to be off to my appointment about 10 or 10:30 so I only have a few minutes. I did not ride the bike this morning, so another day of exercise missed. That is OK I will make up for the rest of the week.
Still no update for my Smart- phone out yet, it is support to be here by the end of the month, don’t look like it will make it.
Weight; maybe something is about to change in my weight ………. I have been the exact same weight for 3 days in a roll, I usual change a little each day. I sure would like to see a downward move! We’ll keep trying, yes we will.
OK I have talked to the bank again and they have changed things around in a way that I should not be charged any fees ………….. again. If I see a fee again I will not even talk with them again I will just move the account. I may have too many eggs in one basket at Wells Fargo anyways I may need to spread my accounts across more banks. I may start an account with the bank I spoke of yesterday so I will be ready next time.
I am updating all my toys again, seeing as I am in Alamogordo, Tab, Smartphone and Laptop Computer. Staying in side mostly out of the heat. I am only 25 miles or so away form my RV but the temperature is about 20° higher at this lower elevation. Setting in Wendy’s using their WiFi.
(Back at the RV) I just got back on the internet here at the RV, there are times I can not make a connection no matter how hard I try, I just have to wait till the airways are ready to allow it.
Weather today is nice on the mountain and was kind of hot down in Alamogordo today, I was glad to get back to the mountain. Looking at the weather it looks like Alamogordo will be over a 100° ever day this week while the hottest day here this week will be 86° but best of all the hottest night here will only be 55° , still very good sleeping. It is about 7:30 now and is already starting to cool off nicely.
Exercise was a walk today after getting back from the valley, I walked only 4.5 miles. I felt very tired too. Maybe I’ll do better tomorrow and maybe not. LOL.
I eat too much tonight here at the RV and I feel stuffed! I got to watch that. My weight is doing good and still moving downward but I can’t have too many meals like that one. I just eat too much.
Well I have quietly added a Donate button to the side bar, so if you want to help an old dude out ……….. I will happily appreciate it.
Yes I will!
I am up and getting ready for my work day. Next week I will start my 3 days on and 4 off, the 3 on will be a long weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday but them I will have 4 days off in a roll, in which I will like very much. It will give me time to do some things when I want to or some of that chill out time I like.
Not sure what kind of day it will be at work today, busy or not, hopefully I will be able to get out of the office some, to mess around doing a little work outside. I like to do some outside as it gives me some exercise. This year I walk a lot more while I am working and that helps with exercise, which I need. Last year my weight kept me off my feet more, too much walking last year and my knees would make a big fuss. My knees still kind of fuss if I do too much but I can do a good bit more this year than I could last year without the knees hurting. A good thing indeed.
One thing I will do at work today is read some of the Electric meters and that will give some walking time. (If it has not already been done). Hopefully I can remember which ones to read, I am sure I will figure it out.
Weight; I am doing OK on the weight front, I have had a little stand still for about two weeks but I think I may be moving in the downward direction again. In weight loss you get those little stand still now and again. Hopefully this one has passed. The over all weight trend is down, thank goodness. It is so hard for me to push back from the table, but we are doing pretty well.
Tablet/Smartphone; Did you know that I use both my tablet and smart phone at work? I am a terrible speller so I use them to help me spell by using the Dictionary app and I also use them to help people find places that they want to go to. Very handy indeed. The first year I worked here I had neither and I was always getting ask where this or that was and I just had to say “I don’t know” and now I can say “wait I will see if I can find that for you” and that is much better. I do find most everything that people are looking for, where a street is, a kind of store is, post office, banks and so on. It is good to be helpful when you can. LOL, a new skill for me!
OK time to head for work, so have a great day folks.
The back is a little sore today but none the less I did a 3 mile walk and a bit of stretching, exercise done. I was very careful with the stretching, not putting any pressure on the back. I may have even made it feel a little better, of course tonight may tell yet another story LOL. When I started the walk every step hurt just a tab but it got better as I went. It will take a few days to get back to normal.
The Solar charger is running a little weak today with the overcast sky coming and going but I am sure by days end I will have plenty battery power. My solar system is doing a great job this year.
Time on the computer/smartphone always surprises me with how fast it goes by. I sat down and do a few things look up and hour has passed. I like now that I have the smart-phone because I can use it for many of the little things that I check on the web such weather and other things that only take a minute or two. Smartphones are one of the better inventions in the last few years.
Meeting people is sometimes surprising, as far is what they believe to be the truth. I try not to judge folks for what they believe but still one will surprise me now and again. I guess the boon-docks is the prime place to meet folks with different ideals. LOL, I will say no more.
Exercise is in the bucket, walked today(3 miles maybe) with stretching added at the end.
Email addresses: With multiple email accounts and multiple devices it is hard to keep up with just how things sync together. I don’t add enough addresses to always remember how to input them in a way to keep them all sync with each other. For example when I add an email address I want it to go to both computer email client(Thunderbird), to both my Smartphone and tablet, plus I want it sync online with my main g-mail account. It is ease enough to do, but it must be put in the right place. When adding by one of the computers I must make sure that I have the main account open in the address book and if I do all is well. Adding it to the wrong account or just in the general address book will not get it sync. When adding by phone I must make sure that it is going into the g-mail address book and not the phone’s address book or again it will not sync. When I go for a while and don’t add no one to the address book I forget these little things and must learn them again. I did this just the other day.
Yes I take a few extra steps by having emails in multiple places but I always have a copy of emails that I need when/if something breaks. Also there is a copy of the email addresses with me at all time, which can come in handy sometimes.
It is a beautiful day so I think I will go out and enjoy the day.
Battery maintenance, was done today. I top off the batteries with distill water today and that needs to be done about once a month. My batteries are doing very well as best I can tell. A fully charge battery is about 12.6 volts and that is where my evening starts once the tops voltage wears off(takes about 15 minutes of running something from the batteries). I watch TV for 3 to 5 hours and do other little things like charge my laptop battery or charge other rechargeable batteries around the RV and run a few lights, fans and other little loads. By the time I go to bed my batteries are still at 75% or at a voltage of 12.4. When boon-docking it is OK to run the batteries down to about 50% which is 12.2 volts but no more than that. I hope to keep my batteries for 7 years or so with careful use. We’ll see how that goes , 5 years is considered a good life for golf car/deep cycle batteries. The solar panels bring them back to float voltage of 13.4 by about 12:30 pm. During the afternoon I use my laptop and other small things while keeping my batteries at full capacity, once the batteries reach full charge I have solar energy to spare for other things as long as the sun stays up.
I am playing with the phone again this morning and I am getting better at this Swype thing. Sometimes it surprises me, both in good and bad ways. But as always it is fun to try and make the thing work right. I am sating in Jack in the Box playing with this thing ( I come every morning and have a sandwich and drink). I am a big spender, I spend $1.65 every morning. LOL
The above part of this post, posted from my Thunderbolt phone with the WordPress for Android app.
Finally I have gotten back on the blog. I have been busy doing much of nothing today. I often talk with this nice couple at Jack In Box because they are often there where I am, so this morning we sat around chatting for an hour or so. After that I run around the big city of Wellton for hour or so, getting a new tank of LP and other little things.
When I got back to the RV I play around with the bird feeders for a bit and then I was off on my bike ride for 10 miles. I did a good stretching routine when I returned to the RV.
TV looks like slim pickings tonight so I will take a little time to add a few more lines to the blog. This evening I watch a TWiT show on my tab and it was about blogging. I found it kind of interesting because they talk about way someone wanted to blog. Of course this make me think about why I did, and I have talked about this before and I think it is more of a record to myself than anything else. I sometimes like looking back to see what I did the first year out RVing. I started blogging when I started RVing a little over 4 years ago on 9-11 of 07. I actual date of me getting on the road was 9-9-07 but I had spent the summer in the RV at a house setting job so it is all a matter of how you look at things and the date 9-11 0f 07 is just a good one for me to remember.
I remember the first night out …………… I stayed in a truck stop and was park near another RV and about mid night a car load of younger folks pull in between us and oh boy!!! LOL. I look back at my blog and I see I did think too much on it at the time or at least I did write much about it(I still could not type at the time) but it sure made me think, “man what have I got myself into”. Here is the link to that post. This was posted on the morning of 9-10-2007. I still think about that first night out sometimes LOL.
Today started off with a ride to Las Cruces with a friend who had to make a fast trip up and back.
After returning I play with the Smartphone. I updated and re rooted it. I got the Smartphone to take the update on the 3G connection this morning here in the park before going to Las Cruces and then got it rooted after I got back.
Then started playing with a Samsung Galaxy Tab that I brought from a friend( she give me a good deal on it too) Thanks Marcia, so lots of fun things. I first saved some pictures that my friend wanted me to save and then did a factory reset and it is now like it came new and I can make it the way I want. Will I hack it like my phone? …………….. well maybe later LOL! I have not read a lot on it but I think it may be easier to do with this than a Smartphone.
I have gotten some exercise in one way or the other as I go along, either by riding the bike or walking. So I am doing well with things and staying busy with friends. Life is good.
I have eaten worst foods but not a lot, well not a lot for me anyway. I could do better, for sure.
I do miss the cable TV I had in Sunny Acres LOL. Night Folks.
